Orthodontic treatment (braces) is a way of straightening or moving teeth to improve the appearance and alignment of crooked, protruding, crowded teeth, and to help correct problems with the bite of the teeth.
Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place are harder to clean and are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and/or periodontal disease. They also detract from one's appearance. The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.
The most common form of orthodontic treatment is fixed braces, made from stainless steel which are attached onto the teeth using composite resin. A flexible wire joins all the brackets and allows the teeth to move. Fixed braces are not always made of stainless steel, plastic and ceramic braces can be used as an alternative, especially for adults.
If you are interested in having orthodontic treatment (brace work) please speak to your routine dentist first, they will be able to advise you as to whether your teeth and gums are healthy enough to consider brace treatment or alternatively you may wish to arrange a consultation with our orthodontist Dr Sitlu.
